Mandarin Upskilling Course – 2022-2023

We are pleased to announce that our Mandarin Upskilling Course, now in its fifth year, is open for enrolments for a September start. If you are a qualified primary or secondary teacher in the UK or a PGCE student and are looking to support or introduce the delivery of Mandarin in your school, then this course could help.

The Mandarin Upskilling Course offers a blended learning approach, consisting of a self-study online course punctuated with several core face-to-face workshops as well as regular online sessions. It is planned to fit in with teachers’ busy schedules. The textbooks for the course are KS3 textbooks with many free resources available to accompany them. You will therefore be well-equipped to translate your learning from this course directly into the classroom.

Hear what our participants have to say about the Mandarin Upskilling Course and the support they receive in these two videos:

Karine Karapetyan and Isabel Ferrero, Level 1

Caron Goodacre-Phillips and Antonio da Silva, Level 2

You can also hear some of our lovely MA student volunteers discuss how they help in our workshops below:

The Mandarin Upskilling Course aims to build UK teachers’ Mandarin language proficiency to teach up to HSK-3 level, across three years. Each level takes one year to complete. At the end of each year, your progress will be assessed and, if you pass, certificates of completion will be provided.

In normal circumstances, we run intensive learning trips to China in July for Level 2 participants, which we hope to resume once it is safe and practical to do so.

The course is free, other than travel & textbook costs.
