Chinese teachers’ e-forum

The CI has a Chinese teachers’ e-forum, which is free to join. Teachers use it to exchange ideas and network with each other.

Teacher training

We provide a variety of training opportunities for current and prospective teachers of Chinese and their schools.

Teaching materials

We work with primary and secondary teachers as well as experts in the field to produce a series of teaching materials.

Opportunities for schools

We run a series of training, networking  and student events for all those involved in Chinese in schools. This includes our Annual Chinese Conference, the Summer Study Camps, Headteacher visit to China and more.

Mandarin Chinese for Primary Schools

The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) is working with partner HSBC to extend provision for Mandarin Chinese language learning in the primary sector (Mandarin Chinese for Primary Schools). The initiative aims to reach 3,500 primary school children across the country.
If you are thinking of teaching Mandarin, we want to hear from you!

Research

We are involved in and leading Action Research around teaching methodology in Mandarin classrooms across the country, supported by our network of IOE Confucius Classrooms and our current programme of training opportunities.

The Confucius China Studies Programme offers research opportunities.

The Teaching and Learning of Chinese in Schools (PDF) is a paper written by Katharine Carruthers that provides an overview of the state of the field with respect to the teaching and learning of Chinese in schools in England. It discusses the work of the IOE Confucius Institute for Schools and the issues we have been addressing around teaching materials, teacher supply and assessment for learners of Chinese.
