MEP Independent Evaluation Launch

The IOE Confucius Institute for Schools has been delivering the Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP) since 2016, in partnership with the British Council. It is an intensive language programme, funded by the Department for Education. The overarching aim was to have 5,000 students in state-maintained schools across England on track to fluency in Mandarin Chinese by 2020.

That target was achieved and as of September 2020 there are almost 7,000 students enrolled on the programme, with good national coverage.

And that isn’t the only good news to start the New Year with! The programme has also been independently evaluated and the report showcases the incredible results the MEP has achieved. The Independent Evaluation will be published in full on the IOE CI website on Thursday 21st January.

To find out more about the MEP and findings from the Independent Evaluation, why not join us for a webinar on Thursday 21 January from 16:00-17:00? Hosted on Teams Live the webinar will offer the opportunity to hear from the MEP Strategic Director, Katharine Carruthers, on the of aims the programme and from Research Stories, the Independent Evaluator, on their findings. Please click here to sign up if you are interested.

If you are a member of staff in one of our MEP schools, please note that there will be a separate event, exclusively for our MEP network, to celebrate the launch of the Independent Evaluation. Please email mandarinexcellence@ucl.ac.uk for more information.
