The Dynasties, daggers and duty: a Chinese Cinema Study Day for KS3 Mandarin will take place at the British Film Institute (BFI) on Tuesday 31st January between 10:30 – 15:30. Please not that the event is intended for teachers and students only.
The study day will use clips from a variety of Chinese feature films as a stimulus to students’ learning about the culture and history of China. The morning session will start with a brief history of China and its unique culture plus give an introduction to current film-makers and Chinese stars. We will then screen clips from a range of films from depictions of traditional Chinese tales such as The Curse of the Golden Flower to more contemporary, action-based fare like The House of Flying Daggers. Themes such as tradition versus modernisation; rural versus urban life and young versus old, will be explored through the clips. There will be an introduced afternoon screening of the delightful, award-winning feature film, Not One Less, (2010) plus Q&A. A resource pack will be available on the day.
