Young Photographers’ Competition 2021 – Now Open!

We are excited to announce that our Young Photographers’ Competition is now open for submissions.

The contest, now in its seventh year of running, aims to challenge cultural stereotypes of China through photography and show the vast country through young people’s eyes. With this in mind, we encourage students to be creative and resourceful with their entries. Given the past two years’ travel restrictions, we hope students can uncover ‘hidden’ China with their work!

Winning entries will be exhibited on our website and on-site at UCL and the Chinese Embassy, COVID-permitting. Gift card prizes will be awarded to the winning individuals and runners-up, and to the schools of prize-winning students.

There are five single-entry categories students can choose from. To help our younger photographers, one category is for under 14s only:

  • Chinese stories
  • Chinese community and friends
  • Characters of China (under 14s only)
  • My Chinese studies
  • Chinese design at home

Students should send their entries with a title (‘Untitled’ is fine!) to us at chinesenetworks@ucl.ac.uk, along with their name, age, school and chosen category/theme, by 31st December 2021. Pupils aged 18 and under are eligible for this contest.

We hope to select winners when the university reopens in the new year, following the winter break. In the meantime, please take a look at the Young Photographers’ Competition page on our website to see what pupils have come up with over the years and how they’ve interpreted past categories.
