20150727_10225625 July – 5 August 2016

Following the success of the first Language Enhancement Course in 2015, we are now inviting applications for 2016.

About: This two-week course in China for non-native, proficient speakers of Mandarin to improve your language skills both in the classroom and everyday life.

Target Participants: This course is for advanced/ proficient (non-native) speakers of Chinese, who are currently teaching Mandarin Chinese in the UK up to A-level. The course will immerse you in a native-speaking environment, in order to improve your language and cultural skills. Please note, this course is NOT suitable for intermediate speakers.

Content and Format: Content will be based on themes relevant to the demands of UK examinations, and participants can expect a minimum of 30 hours’ tuition per week (Mon-Fri).

Course content has been developed between the expert teachers at ECNU, and the UCL IOE Confucius Institute, to ensure that you are studying relevant and challenging material. There will be a strong focus on correct pronunciation and tone, as well as developing writing skills. There will also be input on methodology, alongside lectures and talks delivered in Chinese. Finally, being in China there will be ample opportunities provided to get into the “real world” and practice your Mandarin in everyday situations.

Expected Outcomes: Placing this course in China provides a unique opportunity for dedicated teachers to improve their language skills, alongside developing essential cultural and methodology knowledge. In addition, the course will allow teachers valuable time to share knowledge and best practice in a way that is not always possible in the UK.

Cost: This course is generously subsidised by Hanban. Participants will cover the costs of their own airfare, food, visa costs and travel insurance. All other costs, including tuition fee, teaching resources, accommodation and some organised excursions are covered by Hanban.

Application: Applications is now open for 2016. Places are limited, so please apply soon. Click here to fill in the online application. If you have any query, please email the team chinesenetworks@ioe.ac.uk.

This two-week intensive language course is organised by UCL Institute of Education with East China Normal University in Shanghai, supported by the Chinese Language Council International (Hanban).
