On Tuesday 15 October, our five new IOE Confucius Classrooms (CCs) received their iconic Hanban plaques.
Joan Deslandes, Headteacher of IOE CC at Kingsford Community School and acting chair of the China Headteacher Steering Group, and Katharine Carruthers, Director of IOE Confucius Institute (CI), presented the plaques to representatives of the five newly designated Confucius Classrooms:
- Joanne Hall – Greasby Infant School (Wirral)
- Ennelyn Schmidt-Roberts – Lambeth Academy (south London)
- Richard Hunter – Robin Hood Primary (Birmingham)
- Kate Atkins – Rosendale Academy (south London)
- Jennifer Buster – St Mary Magdalene Academy (north London)

The new Confucius Classrooms were officially designated at the IOE CI launch in May 2013. They had received a framed certificate at the time while awaiting their official bronze plaques, which are custom-made for Hanban in China.
The bronze plaques were presented at the IOE Confucius Classroom annual planning meeting at IOE’s John Adams Hall in London. Confucius Classroom Managers and Headteachers from across England came together to find out about activities in other areas, discuss their successes and share ideas for the year ahead. This year’s meeting focused on ways to strengthen our regional Chinese teaching networks.
