From October 2011 to February 2012, the IOE Confucius Institute for Schools successfully ran three teacher training courses. Each course lasted one week consisting of 10 sessions focusing on different aspects of teaching Chinese as a second language.

Format of the course
Each one-week course consisted of 10 x 3hr sessions covering various topics with a combination of academic input and practical ideas with respect to classroom teaching. At the end of the course, the participants were required to complete a 2,000 word essay reflecting on what they had learned and a lesson plan for a class of 50 minutes. They were issued with an certificate if their work reached the standard.

Speakers
The speakers were a combination of both academics from renowned universities and classroom teachers with great experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The school experts include both Chinese specialist and other Modern Foreign languages teachers with some of them as the authors of popular teaching resources and Advanced Skills teachers.
