The UCL IOE CI is pleased to announce two free twilight sessions for teachers of the Pre U examination, to be delivered in November and December. These are participatory discussion sessions, with the main focus on approaches to student preparation and marking. These sessions will be led by our CI Director Katharine Carruthers OBE, who until 2018 was the Chief Examiner for this examination.
To help us tailor the sessions to teachers’ specific needs, we will be asking participants for questions in advance of the sessions, to build into our planning.
Session 1: 25th November 3-5pm
This session will focus on the language papers, specifically covering the following:
- An in-depth look at the thinking behind the specification, the papers and how they are marked.
- guided discussion around application of the mark scheme for a listening summary, a speaking exam and an essay, using examples from a Mock.
- Guided input on how to make use of Examiner Reports.

Session 2: 2nd December 3-5pm
This session will focus on the culture paper of the exam, specifically covering the following:
- An in-depth look at the thinking behind the specification, the papers and how they are marked.
- An opportunity to look and discuss at the application of the mark scheme across two essays.
- A reminder of resources available to teachers through the Pre-U Teachers’ site, UCL IOE CI, the University of Leicester and Oxford University.

Important note for teachers
Please note, you will need to sign up to sessions individually. If you sign up for Session 1, this does not automatically grant you a space in Session 2 (and vice-versa). You are free to sign up to just one session if you wish.
