This year the IOE CI Annual Chinese Teaching Conference will take place on Saturday October 19th. We are now inviting workshop proposals on this year’s conference theme of “New Perspectives: New Horizons (新观点，新视野）. To find out more and about how to submit a a proposal please continue to read below.
The 2024 annual Chinese teaching conference will be focused on thinking ahead to the next steps needed to make Chinese a long-term, sustainable language option for schools. At the 20th annual conference last year, we reflected on what has been achieved so far. In this year, the 21st conference, we want to look ahead and consider how to sustain our achievements with innovative methods and thinking. To guide your thinking, we have listed thematic strands below, however we are happy to receive any teacher-led proposal on any area of interest suitable to share with the wider teaching community.
Workshop themes (guide only)
1.Research informed practice
- How can research inform our practice? What should we be reading? (please give examples/case studies of application of research in a classroom, and any adaptations)
- What research training is on offer and what more is needed?
- How can we develop research questions collectively?
- Are there helpful case studies internationally?
2. Unlocking potential: effective use of the latest technology
- Can effective use of technology give more time for teaching?
- How to become a proficient user of technology in the classroom?
- Developing technology routines to use with students
- Technology and collaboration with partner schools in China
- What are the limitations and constraints of using technology that we should be mindful of?
3.Mandarin in KS5
- Preparing for transition by getting beyond the GCSE syllabus in KS4?
- Schemes of Work for KS5
- Teaching the A-level specification
- Teaching the HSK specification
- Teaching the IB specification
4.Teaching Chinese Culture
- Integrating Culture into Schemes of Work – KS2, 3, 4 or 5
- Learning Mandarin and the development of identity for students
- Evaluating the impact of teaching culture in the language classroom
- Interculturality – how can this be achieved?
5.Mandarin in Schools Internationally
- What can we learn from international case studies and good practice?
- What is happening with respect to Chinese teaching in schools in other anglophone countries?
- How can schools teaching Chinese at home and abroad work together?
- School Partnerships in China or with other schools teaching Chinese – visits and beyond
- Innovative ways to develop local, national and international collaborations
Guidance for workshop proposals
Please submit all proposals using the following link:

Proposals should be brief (100- 250 words) and include the following:
- A working title
- The subject matter
- Clear learning outcome(s) for participants
- The format of the session
- Your full name
(Please note: free entry to the conference on the day of presentation will only be granted to ONE presenter per workshop. Any other presenters will have to purchase a ticket. We do not encourage workshop proposals with more than two presenters)
Workshop sessions are provisionally scheduled for 50 minutes and should include sufficient time for questions and answers.
The selection panel will favour workshop proposals that:
- Offer practical hands-on advice from teaching professionals and for teaching professionals
- Emphasise new ideas, innovative approaches and fresh perspectives
- Support the conference topic areas (as listed above)
- Refer to examples from experience (and research where available): what works and what does not
- Encourage audience participation. NB: If your workshop is predominantly a research-based presentation, please indicate this, so that we can make it clear to conference guests.
We would like to encourage anyone with an idea to submit a proposal and warmly welcome submissions from all stages and backgrounds.
Please note: proposals to advertise commercial products or services will not be considered for the main conference sessions. Any commercial organisation wishing to submit a proposal will be asked to name a school/ teacher as the main presenter, and the workshop must be based on classroom teaching/ school-based experience.
